At the outset of the environmental assessment, the community stated that they would like to enhance the business and social interaction between Cornwall and Cornwall Island. The existing high level bridge is a barrier to such development. Many are of the opinion that the Akwesasne community would benefit greatly by the replacement of the structure with a low level crossing.

Intro

Welcome to the first edition of the Ontario First Nations Environmental Assessment Toolkit. The purpose of this Toolkit is to assist First Nations in Ontario whose Aboriginal rights, title or treaty rights may be affected by a project undergoing an environmental assessment (EA). This Toolkit is designed primarily for First Nations leadership, employees and communities. It is meant to provide information and practical advice that will help First Nations participate effectively in EA processes. It is hoped that this Toolkit will help your First Nation develop strategies and decision-making processes that benefit your community and result in favorable outcomes from EAs.
